5.1.3 Commercial.  Automatic sprinklers shall be individually unit prote
in accordance with MIL-S-196.
5.2  Packing  Automatic sprinklers preserved as specified in 5.1 shall be
packed level A, B, C or commercial as specified (see 6.2), in accordance with
MIL-S-196.
5.3  Marking  In addition to any special marking required (see 6.2), unit,
intermediate and exterior shipping containers for levels A, B, C and commercial
shall be marked in accordance with MIL-S-196.

may be helpful, but is not mandatory.)
6.1 Intended use.  The thermo-sensitive automatic sprinklers covered by this
specification are intended for shipboard firefighting by reacting at a predeter-
mined temperature, automatically releasing a stream of water In a specified
pattern and density over a designated area when installed on the appropriate
sprinkler piping.  Sprinklers may be installed in wet and dry sprinkling systems.
Sprinklers installed in wet systems will be exposed to stagnant seawater for
extended periods of time.
6.1.1 Damaged or actuated units.  Any automatic sprinkler that is damaged
deformed, actuated by ambient temperature, or operated due to fire, should be
replaced.  Sprinklers are not capable of being repaired or operating parts
replaced or adjusted.

(a) Title, number, and date of this specification.
(b) Configuration (upright, pendant, or horizontal sidewall), size, and
temperature rating of sprinkler head.
(c) Quantity required.
(d) First article test (see 3.1 and 4.3).
(e) Levels of preservation-packaging and packing required (see 5.1 and
5.2).
(f) When intermediate containers are required (see 5.1.1.1) .
(g)  Marking required (see 5.3).
6.3 Consideration of data requirements.  The following data requirements
should be considered when this specification is applied on a contract. The
applicable Data Item Descriptions (DID's) should be reviewed in conjunction with
the specific acquisition to ensure that only essential data are requested/provided
and that the DID's are tailored to reflect the requirements of the specific
acquisition.  To ensure correct contractual application of the data requirements,
a Contract Data Requirements List (DD Form 1423) must be prepared to obtain the
data, except where DoD FAR Supplement 27.475-1 exempts the requirement for a DD
Form 1423.
