4.4.2  Examination.
Samples selected in accordance with 4.4.1 shall be examined

4.5.1  Examination.
The seal shall be examined as specified herein for the

Materials are not resistant to corrosion and deterioration, or not treated
to be resistant to corrosion and deterioration for the applicable storage
and operating environment (see 3.3.2).

Dissimilar metals as defined in MIL-STD-889 are not effectively insulated
from each other (see 3.3.2.1).
Contractor does not have documentation available for identification of

material, material finishes or treatment (see 3.3.2.2).
Used, rebuilt or remanufactured components, pieces or parts incorporated in

the seal (see 3.3.2.3),

Tests.
The test specimens used for the
4.5.2.1
Carbon sealing washer physical tests.
physical tests of the sealing washer shall be made from a completed sealing washer
or a specimen of a different shape made of the same material as that in the carbon
washers.
4.5.2.1.1
Scleroscope hardness.
The hardness test shall be conducted in
accordance with ASTM C 886.
An average hardness reading of less than 60 shall
constitute failure of this test.
4.5.2.1.2  Comp ressive strength.
The compressive strength test shall be
conducted in accordance with ASTM E 9.
A compressive strength of less than 32,000
psi shall constitute failure of this test.
