3.16 Type I (forced discharge). Type I semitrailers shall be equipped with a forced discharge
system and shall conform to the requirements specified in 3.16.1 through 3.16.5.
3.16.1 Pump. An engine driven, self-priming centrifugal pump shall be installed in the right
(curbside) cabinet. The pump shall have 75 mm (3-inch) auction and discharge ports. The pump
shall be constructed of either cast iron or welded steel. The pump shall be equipped with marked
drain plug(s) located to assure complete drainage.
3.16.1.1 Suction. The engine driven pump shall be capable of filling the tank from a
nonpressurized outside source at a rate of at least 756 L/min (200 gpm). Pump performance
requirements shall be met with the pump drawing water from a source 4570 mm (15 feet) below
the suction port of the pump, through 14 meters (m) (45 feet) of 75 mm (3-inch) id suction hose
equipped with a foot strainer and with the suction hose coupled to the pump by a 45-degree
elbow. Pump performance shall be met under these suction conditions while loading the tank
through the manhole or fill cover with 15 m (50 feet) of 64 mm (2.5 inch) id discharge hose.
3.16.1.2 Discharge. The pump shall be capable of discharging the contents of the tank at a
rate of not less than 756 L/min (200 gpm) against a static head of 7600 mm (25 feet) plus the
static head created by discharge through the manifold piping and valve(s) and 23 m (75 feet) of
64 mm (2.5 inch) discharge hose.
*  3.16.2 Engine. The pump shall be driven by a diesel engine. The engine shall be air cooled,
with the power, torque and speed necessary to satisfactorily operate the pump. The engine shall
be furnished complete with all accessories necessary for operation, including:
(a)
Air cleaner
(b)
Starting system
(c)
Alternator or generator
(d)
Battery
(a)
Fuel tank of sufficient capacity for eight hours of normal operation
(f)
Exhaust system
(g)
Engine mounted instrument panel with throttle control
(h)
Start/stop switch and
(i)
Battery charging indicator.
The battery shall be of the maintenance-free type having the maintenance-free characteristics listed
in W-B-131. The engine shall be provided with an ether aid cold start system, glow plug or grid
heater.
