3.8.6.1.4 Size. The cabinet shall be of sufficient size to provide ready access to enclosed
components for operation, maintenance, and repair. The cabinet shall be of full-flanged, flush
type construction.

3.8.6.1.5 Access doors. Twin, full-length, vertically hinged, full-flanged, flush type,
swinging doors shall be provided. The doors shall open from the control cabinet center (hinged
at the body sides) with no center post, to provide an unrestricted opening into the control cabinet.
The width of the doors shall be sufficient to provide free access to all cylinder valves and all
cylinder manifold assembly components when the doors are open. Means shall be provided for
securing the doors in the open position. Unless manually actuated, the latches shall not release
the doors when the semitrailer is subjected to wind gusts. Access door latches shall be corrosion
resistant and shall be constructed to permit operation by personnel wearing heavy mittens. They
shall include provisions for looking with common padlocks.
3.8.6.2 Cabinet lighting. Not less than two 12-volt dome lamps shall be installed in the
control cabinet to provide sufficient lighting for safe operation of the trailer. The dome lamps
shall be designed to operate on electric energy supplied from the towing vehicle. Light switches
shall be provided in the cabinet to control the lights manually and to turn off the lights when the
cabinet doors are closed.
3.8.6.3 Portable lighting.
3.8.6.3.1 Floodlamp sockets. Disconnect sockets for attachment of the floodlamps
specified in 3.8.6.3.2 shall be securely mounted in a convenient location at the right and left
corners of the control cabinet. The floodlamp sockets shall be wired into the dome lamp circuit
to be always on.
3.8.6.3.2 Floodlamp. A weatherproof, quickly attachable, portable floodlamp, equipped
with a bulb not less than 50 candle power (cp), shall be provided with each semitrailer. The
floodlamp shall be designed to operate on 12-volt electric energy supplied from the truck tractor
through the disconnect sockets specified in 3.8.6.3.1.
3.8.6.3.3 Attachment device. The floodlamp shall be provided with a quick-attachment
device with which it may be quickly and readily attached to either rear corner of the semitrailer
in a convenient location where its light will not be blocked by panels or doors. The
quick-attachment device shall include a ball-and-socket or similar joint that will permit the light
to be directed anywhere in a 270 degree arc around the corner of the corner of the semitrailer to
which it is attached.
