3.5.4 SOARS Controller - The system Controller shall provide as a minimum
the following required functions and indications for the operation of the SOARS.
1.
Mode Selector switch

Fast Synchronization switch (pushbutton)

Latitude Manual control
Malfunction Warning lamp

3.5.4.1 Function Contents - The SOARS Controller allows the pilot to
control the operation of the system. It contains a button to command fast
erection in pitch and roll; a mode selection switch for DIvERGENCY, SLAVED, and
DG modes of operation; a unit that will cause a fast synchronization in SLAVED
mode, or can be used to set heading to any angle in DG mode; a latitude function
to set in the proper earth's rate correction; an annunciator to indicate the
error between output heading and magnetic heading in SLAVED mode; a magnetic
variation function; and a system malfunction warning lamp.
3.5.4.2 Weight - The weight of the Controller shall not exceed 1.0 pound.
3.5.4.3 Form Factor - The SOARS Controller shall have a volume not
exceeding 40 cubic inches. The Controller form factor shall be in accordance
with Figure 10.
3.5.4.4 Controller Design - The SOARS Controller shall the designed in
accordance with MIL-C-6781, Type I. Fasteners shall conform to MIL-F-25173 and
plastic plate lighting shall conform to MIL-P-7788, Type IV except as follows:
1. The contrast, stray light, and dial visibility requirements of
MIL-L-27160 shall apply. Stray light shall be measured 1 inch in front of the
Controller panel.
2. The SOARS Controller lighting (red, 5.0 volts) shall meet the
color requirements of MIL-L-25467C and the brightness requirements of
MIL-P-7788.
3.5.4.5 Prime Standard - Panel lighting shall be compared to and shall
balance in brightness and color with the prime standard. The prime standard
shall meet the requirements of 3.5.4.4. Visual comparisons shall be made in a
dark room at a distance of 2 1/2 feet.
