MIL-S-85419 (AS)
3.6.22.1 Oil Level.  The starter/APU shall incorporate a
suitable system to maintain proper oil levels and prevent oil
flooding since the aircraft main engine oil tank will be
pressurized up to 5 psi above ambient pressure when the aircraft
main engine is operating.
3.6.22.2 Oil Filters.  The starter/APU shall provide for the
filtration of inlet oil and discharge oil.  The discharge oil
filter shall be of a 50 micron size to prevent contamination of
the aircraft main engine oil in the event of a starter/APU
failure.  Removal and replacement of filter elements shall not
require the disassembly of the starter/APU.
3.6.22.3 Oil Consumption.  The oil consumption rate of the
starter/APU shall not exceed 60CC per hour.
3.6.22.4 Oil Drain Provisions.  Gravity oil drains shall be
provided.  Magnetic oil drain plugs shall be provided at each
drain.  The starter/APU shall be designed such that oil draining
shall not require disassembly.
3.6.23 Starter Initiator System.  The starter initiator shall be
an electric motor designed to operate from 24 volt dc 15 ampere
hour sealed lead acid battery military Part No. D8565/3-1 and 28
volt dc power conforming to MIL-STD-704 capable of producing a
minimum of 500 amperes.
Initiator Engaging Clutch.  The initiator shall be
3.6.23.1
provided with a clutch which shall automatically engage and
disengage the initiator from the starter accessory drive.
3.6.23.2 Initiator Running Engagement.  The starter shall suffer
no detrimental effects when subjected to running engagements of
the initiator motor.
3.6.23.3 Initiator Torque Limiting.  The starter initiator motor
shall incorporate, if required, a positive type torque limiting
device to protect the starter from excessive shock loads during
engagement or re-engagement.
Initiators utilizing output drive
shear sections must be designed to permit replacement of the
shear section without disassembly of the initiator or accessory
gearbox.
3.6.24 Electrical Requirements.
3.6.24.1 Starter/APU Initiator.  The starter/APU shall be
successfully started and operated by either a 15 ampere hour
sealed lead acid battery military Part No. D8565/3-1 or a 28 volt
dc external power source conforming to MIL-STD-704 capable of
producing a minimum of 500 amperes.
