MIL-S-85419 (AS)
continued use of the starter, shall be sufficient cause for
rejection of the starter.
After completion of the inspection of
4.5.10 Containment.
4.5.9, the following containment demonstrations shall be
required.  Unless oherwise specified, the flywheel shall be
attached for all cycles.  The test shall demonstrate compliance
with the containment requirements of 3.6.7.  Parts may fall from
the starter exhaust port provided they contain no destructive
energy.  This shall be demonstrated by placing the starter inside
a cylindrical shaped witness shield placed within one foot,
except for the exhaust area, where the witness shield shall be
placed within three feet of the starter exhaust port located such
that the exhaust gas stream will impinge normal to the shield.
The witness shield shall be constructed of soft aluminum (0.032
inch maximum thickness) conforming to Federal Specification
QQ-A-250/1C Aluminum Alloy 1100, Plate and Sheet.
Uncontrolled Overspeed Power Output Section.  The
4.5.10.1
starter shall be subjected to an uncontrolled overspeed condition
(in the power output and speed reduction assemblies) by operating
with all cutoff devices in the power output and speed reduction
assemblies rendered inoperative and the flywheel removed for a
period of not less than 40 seconds.
4.5.10.2 Uncontrolled Overspeed Gas Generator Section.  The
starter/APU shall be subjected to an uncontrolled overspeed
condition (in the gas generator section) by operating with all
fuel controls disabled to provide maximum fuel flow and all
cutoff devices in the gas generator section rendered inoperative.
4.5.10.3 Overrunning Clutch Failure.  The starter output shaft
overrunning device shall be rendered inoperative.  The output
shaft shall be driven to 11,000 rpm and maintained for a minimum
of 5 minutes.
4.5.11  Initiator Running Engagement.  The starter/APU shall be
subjected to five running engagements of the starter's initiation
motor.
If the initiator motor
4.5.12 Initiator Torque Limiting.
incorporates a shear section, the shear section shall be tested
to failure to demonstrate overtorque protection.
The starter/APU shall be
4.5.13 Initiator Engaging Clutch.
subjected to a maximum of 5 start cycles with the initiator
engaging clutch rendered unable to disengage.  Failure of the
starter initiator motor shall be cause for termination of this
test.  Failure of the initiator shall demonstrate design
conformance with the containment requirements of 3.6.7.
