APPENDIX
TEST METHOD NO. 29
PERFORMANCE (FORDING)
1.
TEST COURSE:
The test course shall be a sandy beach area and a body of
seawater of sufficient depth to permit submersion of the
forklift to the depth specified.
2.
TEST PROCEDURE:
a. Paint a horizontal white line on each side of the forklift at
the specified fording depth.
b. Operate the forklift with rated load as follows:
(1) Drive the forklift into the water to the speci ied depth,

including wave action. Maneuver the forklift for a period of
not less than 15 minutes parallel to the beach and toward the
beach to a minimum water depth equal to the centerline height
of the wheels. Maneuvering shall consist of the following:
(aa) Drive the forklift forward in first gear at maximum safe
speed for a period of 3 minutes. Stop the forklift by
applying the service brakes.
(bb) Drive the forklift backward in low reverse at maximum
safe speed for a period of 3 minutes. Stop the fork lift
by applying the service brakes.
(cc) During the 6-minute cycle in ( a) and (bb), the steering
a
system shall be actuated from stop to stop.
(dd) At the and of the 6-minute cycle and while at maximum
water depth, operate all hydraulic cylinders, except
steering cylinders, through one complete movement cycle.
(2) At the end of the 15-minute period, drive the forklift onto
the beach and repeat the maneuvering at maximum attainable
speed for a period of 15 minutes.
c. Repeat the procedure in 2(b) for a total of 8 hours per day
for 10 days. Prior to leaving the water for the last time
during the 8-hour period and while at maximum water depth,
shut down the engine and restart it.
d. At the end of each 8-hour period and after scheduled
servicing, the forklift shall be parked on the beach in an
unprotected location and left until start of the next 8-hour
period.
e. Park the forklift in an unprotected location on the beach for
10 days.
f. Repeat the test in 2(c) for 5 days.
