* 3.4.2.3 Radio interference suppression. The vehicle shall be suppressed to limit
electromagnetic radiation in accordance with SAE J551. Any body equipment emitting
electromagnetic radiation shall be suppressed to the same level as the vehicle chassis.
3.4.3 Exhaust system. The exhaust system shall conform to Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Regulation 393.83 as specified for buses.
3.4.4 Transmission.
*  3.4.4.1 Automatic transmission. Unless otherwise specified (see 3.4.4.2), an automatic
transmission shall be furnished.
3.4.4.2 Manual transmission. When specified (see 6.2), a manually shifted transmission
shall be provided. The transmission shall have not less than three forward speeds and one
reverse speed. The transmission shall provide for maximum ease of shifting with synchronized
shift in all gear ranges.
*  3.4.4.3 Clutch. The clutch shall be the largest capacity clutch offered for the type vehicle
and engine furnished with torque capacity exceeding maximum delivered engine torque. The
clutch lining shall be asbestos free.
3.4.5 Suspension. The vehicle shall be equipped with a suspension system having a rated
capacity at least equal to the load imposed on each member, measured at the ground, with the
vehicle loaded to specified GVW. When the suspension is rated at the spring pads, unsprung
weight shall be deducted. The vehicle shall be equipped with a hydraulic double-acting shock
absorber at each wheel.
3.4.6 Axles. Axle ratings shall be at least equal to the load imposed on each axle measured
at the ground, with vehicle loaded to specified GVW. A single reduction rear axle shall be
furnished.
3.4.6.1 Positive-traction differential. When specified (see 6.2), a rear axle with a
positive-traction, limited-slip, or automatic locking differential shall be furnished.
*  3.4.7 Tires. Steel belted radial or, when specified (see 6.2), bias ply tires shall be furnished.
Tires shall be tubeless type with highway tread. Tires shall have a rated capacity at least equal to
the load imposed on each tire, measured at each wheel, at the ground, with the vehicle loaded to
specified GVW. Tires and tire size designation systems shall conform to the Tire and Rim
Association or to the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation recommendations.

3.4.7.1 Carrier for spare tire assembly. A carrier for a spare tire assembly shall be installed.
