3.5.9.3.1 Domelights (dc). Two 12-volt domelights shall be connected to the vehicle chassis
electrical system. A single switch to control both lights shall be located inside the body and
adjacent to the streetside rear door. The switch shall be appropriately labeled. In addition, a
separate switch shall be provided on one of the domelights to control these lights. Dome lights
shall be located centrally along the longitudinal axis and 18 inches from the front and rear walls.
* 3.5.9.3.2 Domelights (ac). Six 120-volt domelights shall be connected to the ac system. Not
less than two switches, each protected by a separate 20-ampere circuit breaker, shall be provided
for the domelights and shall be appropriately labeled. Switches shall be located inside the body
and adjacent to the road street (left side) rear door. Three domelights shall be located
approximately 18 inches inward from each interior side wall and approximately equally spaced
between the front and rear walls.
3.5.10 Detachable access ladder. A detachable access ladder of the flatstep type and of
lightweight metal construction shall be provided for use by personnel in entering and leaving the
van body. Ladder steps shall be self-cleaning with an antiskid surface. The ladder shall support
a static load of 350 pounds centrally located on any single step without failure. The ladder side
members shall be designed to provide not less than a 30-degree slope from the vertical and to
eliminate tripping hazards. The top step of the ladder shall be not more than 1 inch below the
bottom edge of the rear door. The top of the ladder and the lower frame of the rear main door
shall include a means for securing the ladder when in use. Stowage for the ladder shall be
furnished on the outside of the body, accessible from the ground, at the rear of the vehicle.
3.5.11 Rear bumper. Rear bumperettes shall be provided.
3.5.12 Space heater. When specified (see 6.2), a gasoline-fired space heater or when
specified, (see 6.2), a diesel fuel fired space heater shall be installed at the front of the van body
interior. A separate fuel tank shall be furnished and shall provide for full operation of the heater
for not less than 8 hours. An identification plate shall be permanently attached and located near
the fuel tanks and shall indicate the type of fuel to be furnished. The plate shall conform to
composition A (class l or 2) or composition C of MIL-P-514. The heater shall have a capacity to
maintain the van body interior at 70F in an ambient temperature of minus 10oF. The heater
shall be provided with a high and low heat selector switch, a thermostatically controlled on-off
switch or an infinitely variable switch to control van body interior temperature. The heater and
installation shall conform to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 393.77.
3.6.13 Body mounting. The body shall be secured with U-bolts, twin studs, brackets, or
J-bolts, and shall include wood breaker strips.
