MIL-T-62518A
ground, shall be provided. When an air compressor is specified (see 3.6.19.9), the hydraulic
pump and the air compressor shall be driven by an auxiliary engine. Chain drives shall not be
used in any system.
3.6.8.5 Hydraulic fluid reservoir. A hydraulic fluid reservoir shall be provided, with
sufficient capacity to hold the required volume of hydraulic fluid, with not less than 10 percent
for expansion space. The reservoir shall be baffled and suction and reservoir ports shall be
located as necessary to ensure thorough mixing of hot return oil and as necessary to prevent
foaming oil from entering the hydraulic system suction port. The reservoir shall be provided
with a filler opening, a removable fill opening oil strainer and a vented filler cap, situated in an
accessible location to facilitate filling the tank from a one-gallon container using a funnel. The
vented filler cap shall have means to prevent fluid from splashing out of the tank during
movement of the vehicle. The filler cap shall be attached to the tank by a corrosion-resistant
chain or cable. Provision shall be made for inspection and cleaning of the interior and for
draining the reservoir. The reservoir drain shall be located so that fluid will not drain on other
components and shall allow recovery of the fluid in a container. The reservoir shall have a
corrosion-resistant plate to indicate the type of hydraulic fluid furnished and the maximum fluid
level in the reservoir with the booms folded for travel and the hydraulic lines and components
full of fluid. A sight level or dipstick gage shall be furnished to observe the level of fluid. The
tank shall be clean.
3.6.8.5.1 Hydraulic fluid. Unless otherwise specified, hydraulic fluid conforming to the
manufacturer's standard or recommended requirements shall be provided in the hydraulic system.
When specified (see 6.2), hydraulic fluid conforming to MIL-H-83282 shall be provided in the
hydraulic system.
*  3.6.8.6 Oil filter and strainers. A full-flow type, 10-micron discharge oil filter in the return
line to the reservoir or in the pressure line immediately after the pump shall be provided. A
100-mesh line strainer shall be provided on the auction aide of the hydraulic system. The filter
and the auction strainer shall be easily accessible for periodic cleaning, or for replacement of the
filter cartridge. The filter and the strainer shall have sufficient capacity to allow the pump to
deliver maximum rated flow.
3.6.8.7 Hydraulic fluid temperature. The hydraulic fluid temperature shall be maintained
within safe limits to prevent seal damage or approach to the flash point of the hydraulic fluid
during all operating conditions of the vehicle and use of the aerial tower hydraulic system for
long periods of time. Excessive heating of the fluid (more than 13C (55F) above ambient in an
ambient of 52C (125F) shall be unacceptable under any operating condition. Provisions shall
be made to prevent malfunction or unactuated operation of the hydraulic control system due to
changes in fluid temperature.
