MIL-T-62518A
3.6.9 Rechargeable electrical system. When specified (see 6.2), a rechargeable electrical
system shall be furnished to drive the hydraulic pump assembly, in addition to the normal power
takeoff drive. The electric motor shall be mounted on the body platform in conjunction with the
hydraulic pump. The motor shall have adequate output power for full compliance with all
performance and lifting requirements and speeds specified herein. The mounting shall minimize
transfer of vibration. The electrical system shall include:
(a)
A minimum 12-volt dc motor
(b)
Industrial battery(s) of not less than 450 ampere-hour capacity
(c)
Provisions for charging battery(s) from the vehicle alternator (see 3.4.2.3)
*  (d)
A 220-volt, single phase battery charger with a dc output capable of recharging the
battery(s) in (b) above in not more than 12 hours
(e)
Hour meter
(f)
Battery charge indicator
(g)
Pressure switches and control circuits
(h)
Battery isolator connected to the chassis charging system which prevents a drain of the
chassis battery during boom operations
*
(i)
Connection of all vehicle lights to the rechargeable electrical system to enable
operation of the lights when this system is being used.
3.6.10 Auxiliary engine. When an air compressor is furnished (see 3.6.10.9), an auxiliary
engine to drive the air compressor and the hydraulic pump shall be furnished, in addition to the
normal power takeoff drive. When specified (see 6.2), an auxiliary engine shall be provided to
drive the hydraulic pump assembly only, in addition to the normal power takeoff drive. The
auxiliary engine shall operate on the same type of fuel as the truck chassis engine. Unless an
auxiliary engine fuel tank is specified, the auxiliary engine fuel supply shall be from the chassis
fuel tanks. The engine shall be mounted on the body platform in conjunction with the hydraulic
pump and, when applicable, the air compressor. Mounting shall minimize the transfer of
vibration. The engine shall be capable of being started and stopped from the aerial basket. The
auxiliary engine shall have sufficient output power to drive all operating components other than
the vehicle. When a gasoline engine is furnished, it shall be capable of warranted operation on
unleaded fuel.
3.6.10.1 Engine components. The engine shall be a two or four-cycle diesel engine on truck
chassis with a diesel engine or a four-cycle gasoline engine on truck chassis with a gasoline
engine. The engine shall be equipped with at least the following components:
(a)
Distributor or magneto type ignition (gasoline engine only)
(b)
Starter, 12-volt
(c)
Resistor type spark plugs (gasoline engine only)
