(BDUs, sheets, blankets , etc.) in accordance with formulas outlined in
FM 10-280.  The washing machine shall be designed and fabricated to provide
proper performance in all types of military applications and conditions
including dust, weather extremes, and temperatures ranging between
to
130%?, and transport as identified in this specification. All components
shall be fully accessible including an externally mounted motor, drive train,
and Control unit.  A water overflow drain shall not be used. All components
(i.e., drain valves, card reader, level control system, electrical compo-
nents, and gear reducer) shall, in addition to meeting all requirements of
this specification, be commercially proven components with a history of
success ful use in industrial laundry applications.  Satisf actory evidence
shall be provided to the contracting activity prior to commencing production.
3.5.1.1 Cylinder.  The cylinder shall have inside dimensions of 36 inches
in diameter by 26 inches in depth.  The cylinder shall have 3 to 4 ribs. The
ribs shall be integral with or seam welded to the cylinder. The cylinder
shall be fully supported from front to back by a cylinder spider and tie rod
system.  The tie rods shall run the full length of the cylinder. The number
of tie rods shall equal the number of ribs. All cylinder welding shall be
continuous.  There shall be no open seams or spaces that may catch buttons or
straps during washing.
3.5.1.2 Drive.  The cylinder shall be belt driven from the motor to a
helical gear reducer.  The washer shaft shall be integral with the helical.
gear reducer.  Gears shall be shaved and heat treated.  Gear box bearings
shall be needle type, tapered, or ball.  Bushings as bearing surfaces are not
allowed.
3.5.1.3 Controls.  The washer shall be equipped with a programmable
control unit which allows for both automatic and manual control of all
electrical, mechanical, and air distribution functions. The control unit
shall be equipped with a master switch which controls all power to the washer
assembly .  A second three position switch shall be provided to select either
AUTOMATIC, OFF, or MANUAL operation.  When the switch is placed in the
AUTOMATIC position, all manual controls shall be overridden and the only
control shall be by the control chart or cad.  When the switch is placed in
the MANUAL position, all automatic input shall be overriden and the only
control shall be by the manual *itches.  The control unit, switches, lights,
labels, and associated parts shall be designed using guidance provided in
MIL-STD-1472 .  All functions associated with water muse shall be controlled
by automatic control only.  Control unit features shall include, but are not
limited to the control and operation of the following functions:
Two independent air actuated drain valves (normal drain and
a.
reuse drain - automatic only).  When either drain valve is in
the open position an override shall be provided to close all
intake valves.

Three independent air actuated intake valves (hot water intake,
cold water intake, and reuse inter intake - automatic only).
